Introduction

1	The weakness of the law sacrifices.
10	The sacrifice of Christ's body once offered,
14	for ever hath taken away sins.
19	An exhortation to hold fast the faith with patience and thanksgiving.

Verse 1
For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.

Verse 3
But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

take: There were essential defects in these sacrifices. 1st.--They were not of the same nature with those who sinned. 2nd.--They were not of sufficient value to make satisfaction for the affronts done to the justice and government of God. 3rd.--The beasts offered up under the law could not consent to put themselves in the sinner's room and place. The atoning sacrifice must be one capable of consenting, and must voluntarily substitute himself in the sinner's stead: Christ did so.; 11; Hosea 14:2; John 1:29; Romans 11:27; 1 John 3:5
