Leviticus 15

Verse 1

spake. See note on Leviticus 5:14 .

Verse 2

children = sons.

flesh. Figure of speech Synecdoche (of Whole). App-6 . = any part of his flesh.

Verse 4

thing = piece of furniture, vessel, or article.

Verse 5

bathe. See note on Leviticus 14:9 .

Verse 8

spit upon him. A common practice among oriental nations to express insult or contempt (Numbers 12:14 .Deuteronomy 25:9 . Job 30:10 . Isaiah 50:6 . Matthew 26:67 .

water. The Severus Codex has "running water", as in Leviticus 15:13 .

Verse 9

saddle = carriage. Occurs only here and 1 Kings 4:26 , where it is rendered "chariot", and Song of Solomon 3:9 . The seat in a palanquin. The feminine form occurs forty-four times, and is always rendered "chariot".

unclean. The Septuagint adds "until evening", as in every other case. See verses: Leviticus 15:5 , Leviticus 15:6 , Leviticus 15:7 , Leviticus 5:8 , Leviticus 5:10 , Leviticus 5:11 . But in these verses persons are referred to. In Leviticus 15:9 it is a thing .

Verse 12

rinsed = washed or baptized. This is what is referred to in Mark 7:4 .

Verse 13

running. Hebrew living, not stagnant. See Leviticus 14:5 .

Verse 14

door = entrance.

tabernacle of the congregation. Hebrew tent ( 'ohel ) of meeting. See App-40 .

Verse 15

offer = prepare. Hebrew. 'asah . App-43 .

make an atonement. See note on Exodus 29:33 .

Verse 16

wash = bathe. Here, with eth kol added, meaning all his body, to distinguish it from the word "flesh", which is thus probably used in this section by the Figure of speech Euphemy ( App-6 ) for private parts. Compare Leviticus 15:5-8 , Leviticus 15:10 , Leviticus 15:11 , Leviticus 15:18 , Leviticus 15:21 , Leviticus 15:22 , Leviticus 15:27 , where the Authorized Version has inserted "himself', in italics. See further note on Leviticus 14:9 .

Verse 24

flowers = uncleanness.

Verse 29

turtles = turtle-doves.

Verse 31

ye = Moses and Aaron.

tabernacle. Hebrew. mishkan, dwelling-place.

Verse 32

This is the law. verses: Leviticus 15:32 , Leviticus 15:33 are a summary of the contents of the chapter, though the order (as in other cases) is varied.
