1 What F64 is the source of quarrels and conflicts R136 among you? Is F65 not the source your pleasures that wage war R137 in your members? 2 You lust and do not have; so you commit R138 murder. You are envious and cannot obtain; so you fight and quarrel. You do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do R139 not receive, because you ask with F66 wrong motives, so that you may spend it on F67 your pleasures. 4 You adulteresses, R140 do you not know that friendship with the R141 world is hostility R142 toward God? Therefore R143 whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think that the Scripture speaks R144 to no purpose: "He F68 jealously F69 desires the R145 Spirit which He has made to dwell in us"? 6 But He R146 gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, "GOD R147 IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE." 7 Submit R148 therefore to God. Resist R149 the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw R150 near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse R151 your hands, you sinners; and purify R152 your hearts, you double-minded. R1539 Be R154 miserable and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble R155 yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
11 Do R156 not speak against one another, brethren. R157 He who speaks against a brother or judges R158 his brother, speaks against the R159 law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a R160 doer of the law but a judge of it.12 There is only one Lawgiver R161 and Judge, the One who is able R162 to save and to destroy; but who R163 are you who judge your neighbor?
13 Come R164 now, you who say, "Today R165 or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, and spend a year there and engage in business and make a profit." 14 Yet F70 you do not know what F71 your life will be like tomorrow. You R166 are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away. 15 Instead, F72you ought to say, "If R167 the Lord wills, we will live and also do this or that." 16 But as it is, you boast in your arrogance; F73 all R168 such boasting is evil. 17 Therefore, to R169 one who knows the right F74 thing to do and does not do it, to him it is sin.
