A Prayer for the Overthrow of the Wicked.
1 Why do R208 You stand afar off, O LORD?
Why do R209 You hide Yourself F91 in times of trouble?
2 In pride R210 the wicked hotly F92 pursue the afflicted;
Let F93 them be caught R211 in the plots which they have devised.
3 For the wicked boasts R212 of his heart's R213 desire,
And the F94 greedy man curses and spurns R214 the LORD.
4 The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, does R215 not seek Him.
All his thoughts F95 are, "There R216 is no God."
5 His ways prosper R217 F96 at all times;
Your judgments are on high, out R218 of his sight;
As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them.
6 He says to himself, "I R219 will not be moved;
Throughout F97 all generations I R220 will not be in adversity."
7 His mouth R221 is full of curses and deceit and oppression; R222
Under R223 his tongue is mischief and wickedness.
8 He sits in the lurking R224 places of the villages;
In the hiding places he kills R225 the innocent;
His eyes stealthily F98 watch for the unfortunate. R226 F99
9 He lurks in a hiding place as a R227 lion in his lair; F100
He lurks R228 to catch the R229 afflicted;
He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his net. R230
10 He crouches, F101 he bows F102 down,
And the unfortunate F103 fall by F104 his mighty ones.
11 He says R231 to himself, "God has forgotten;
He has hidden His face; He will never see it."
12 Arise, O LORD; O God, lift R232 up Your hand.
Do R233 not forget the afflicted.
13 Why has the wicked spurned R234 God?
He has said to himself, "You will not require it."
14 You have seen it, for You have beheld mischief R235 and vexation to take F105 it into Your hand.
The unfortunate R236 F106 commits himself to You;
You have been the helper R237 of the orphan.
15 Break R238 the arm of the wicked and the evildoer,
Seek R239 F107 out his wickedness until You find none.
16 The LORD is King R240 forever and ever;
Nations R241 have perished from His land.
17 O LORD, You have heard the desire R242 of the humble; F108
You will strengthen R243 their heart, You R244 will incline Your ear
18 To vindicate F109 the orphan R245 and the oppressed, R246
So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause terror. R247 FOOTNOTES:
