1 "But now listen, O Jacob, My servant, R1738 And Israel, whom I have chosen: 2 Thus says the LORD who made you And formed R1739 you from the womb, who will R1740 help you, `Do R1741 not fear, O Jacob My servant; And you Jeshurun R1742 whom I have chosen. 3 `For I R1743 will pour out water on the F629 thirsty land And streams on the dry ground; I will pour R1744 out My Spirit on your offspring R1745 And My blessing on your descendants; 4 And they will spring up among F630 the grass Like poplars R1746 by streams of water.' 5 "This one will say, `I am the LORD'S'; And that one will F631 call on the name of Jacob; And another will write R1747 on F632 his hand, `Belonging to the LORD,' And will name Israel's name with honor. 6 "Thus says the LORD, the King R1748 of Israel and his Redeemer, R1749 the LORD of hosts: `I am the first R1750 and I am the last, And there is no God besides R1751 Me. 7 `Who is like Me? Let R1752 him proclaim and declare it; Yes, let him recount it to Me in order, From F633 the time that I established the ancient nation. F634 And let them declare to them the things that are coming And the events that are going to take place. 8 `Do not tremble and do not be afraid; Have R1753 I not long since announced it to you and declared it? And you R1754 are My witnesses. Is there any God besides R1755 Me, Or is there any other Rock? R1756 I know of none.' "

9 Those who fashion a F635 graven image are all of them futile, and their precious things are of no profit; even their own witnesses fail to see or know, so that they will be put R1757 to shame. 10 Who has fashioned a god or cast an F636 idol to no R1758 profit? 11 Behold, all his companions will be put R1759 to shame, for the craftsmen themselves are mere men. Let them all assemble themselves, let them stand up, let them tremble, let them together be put to shame. 12 The man R1760 shapes iron into a cutting tool and does his work over the coals, fashioning F637 it with hammers and working it with his strong arm. He also gets hungry and his F638 strength fails; he drinks no water and becomes weary. 13 Another R1761 shapes wood, he extends a measuring line; he outlines it with red chalk. He works it with planes and outlines it with a compass, and makes it like the form of a man, like the beauty of man, R1762 so that it may sit in a house. R1763 14 Surely he cuts cedars for himself, and takes a cypress F639 or an oak and raises F640 it for himself among the trees of the forest. He plants a fir, and the rain makes it grow. 15 Then it becomes something for a man to burn, so he takes one of them and warms himself; he also makes a fire to bake bread. He also makes R1764 a god and worships it; he makes it a graven image and falls R1765 down before it. 16 Half of it he burns in the fire; over this half he eats meat as he roasts a roast and is satisfied. He also warms himself and says, "Aha! I am warm, I have seen the fire." 17 But the rest of it he makes R1766 into a god, his graven image. He falls down before it and worships; he also prays R1767 to it and says, "Deliver me, for you are my god." 18 They do not know, R1768 nor do they understand, for He has smeared R1769 over their eyes so that they cannot see and their hearts so that they cannot comprehend. 19 No one recalls, F641 nor is there knowledge R1770 or understanding to say, "I have burned half of it in the fire and also have baked bread over its coals. I roast meat and eat it. Then I F642 make the rest of it into an abomination, R1771 I F643 fall down before a block of wood!" 20 He feeds R1772 F644 on ashes; a deceived R1773 heart has turned him aside. And he cannot deliver himself, F645 nor say, "Is R1774 there not a lie in my right hand?"

21 "Remember R1775 these things, O Jacob, And Israel, for you are My R1776 servant; I have formed you, you are My servant, O Israel, you will not R1777 be forgotten by Me. 22 "I have wiped R1778 out your transgressions like a thick cloud And your sins like a heavy F646 mist. Return R1779 to Me, for I have redeemed R1780 you." 23 Shout R1781 for joy, O heavens, for the LORD has done it! Shout joyfully, you lower parts of the earth; Break R1782 forth into a shout of joy, you mountains, O forest, and every tree in it; For the R1783 LORD has redeemed Jacob And in Israel He shows R1784 forth His glory. 24 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, R1785 and the one who formed R1786 you from the womb, "I, the LORD, am the maker of all things, Stretching R1787 out the heavens by Myself And spreading out the earth all F647 alone, 25 Causing R1788 the omens F648 of boasters to fail, Making F649 fools out of diviners, Causing R1789 wise men to draw back And turning F650 their knowledge into foolishness, 26 Confirming R1790 the word of His servant And performing F651 the purpose of His messengers. It is I who says of Jerusalem, `She shall be inhabited!' And of the cities R1791 of Judah, `They R1792 shall be built.' And I will raise up her ruins again. 27 "It is I who says to the depth of the sea, `Be dried up!' And I will make your rivers dry. R1793 28 "It is I who says of Cyrus, R1794 `He is My shepherd! And he will perform all My desire.' And he F652 declares of Jerusalem, `She R1795 will be built,' And of the temple, `Your F653 foundation will be laid.' "

45:1-25 - Study Chapter  - Click for Chapter Audio

1 Thus says the LORD to Cyrus R1796 His anointed, Whom I have taken by the right hand, R1797 To subdue R1798 nations before him And to F654 loose R1799 the loins of kings; To open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: 2 "I will go before you and make R1800 the rough F655 places smooth; I will shatter R1801 the doors of bronze and cut through their iron bars. R1802 3 "I will give you the treasures R1803 F656 of darkness And hidden wealth of secret places, So that you may know that it is I, The LORD, the God of Israel, who calls R1804 you by your name. 4 "For the sake of Jacob R1805 My servant, And Israel My chosen one, I have also called R1806 you by your name; I have given you a title of honor Though you have not R1807 known Me.

5 "I am the LORD, and there R1808 is no other; Besides R1809 Me there is no God. I will gird R1810 F657 you, though you have not known Me; 6 That men R1811 F658 may know from the rising to the setting of the sun That there is no R1812 one besides Me. I am the LORD, and there is no other, 7 The One forming R1813 light and creating R1814 darkness, Causing well-being F659 and creating R1815 calamity; I am the LORD who does all these. 8 "Drip R1816 down, O heavens, from above, And let the clouds pour down righteousness; Let the earth R1817 open up and salvation bear fruit, And R1818 righteousness spring up with it. I, the LORD, have created it. 9 "Woe to the one who quarrels R1819 with his Maker-- F660 An earthenware vessel among F661 the vessels of earth! Will the clay R1820 say to the potter, F660 `What are you doing?' Or the thing you are making say, `He has no hands'? 10 "Woe to him who says to a father, `What are you begetting?' Or to a woman, `To what are you giving F662 birth?' "

11 Thus says the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker: R1822 F663 "Ask R1823 F664 Me about the things to come concerning F665 My sons, R1824 And you shall commit to Me the R1825 work of My hands. 12 "It is I who made R1826 the earth, and created man upon it. I stretched R1827 out the heavens with My hands And I ordained F666 all R1828 their host. 13 "I have aroused him in righteousness R1829 And I will make R1830 all his ways smooth; He will build R1831 My city and will let My exiles go free, R1832 Without any payment or reward," says the LORD of hosts. 14 Thus says the LORD, "The products F667 of Egypt R1833 and the merchandise of Cush R1834 F668 And the Sabeans, men of stature, Will come R1835 over to you and will be yours; They will walk behind you, they will come over in chains R1836 And will bow R1837 down to you; They will make supplication to you: `Surely, F669 God R1838 is with F670 you, and there R1839 is none else, No other God.' " 15 Truly, You are a God who hides R1840 Himself, O God of Israel, Savior! R1841 16 They will be put R1842 to shame and even humiliated, all of them; The manufacturers R1843 of idols will go away together in humiliation. 17 Israel has been saved by the LORD With an everlasting R1844 salvation; You will R1845 not be put to shame or humiliated To all eternity. 18 For thus says the LORD, who created R1846 the heavens (He is the God who formed R1847 the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it a F671 waste R1848 place, but formed it to be inhabited), R1849 "I am the LORD, and there R1850 is none else. 19 "I R1851 have not spoken in secret, In some F672 dark land; I did not say to the offspring R1852 F673 of Jacob, `Seek R1853 Me in a F674 waste place'; I, the LORD, speak R1854 righteousness, Declaring R1855 things that are upright.

20 "Gather R1856 yourselves and come; Draw near together, you fugitives of the nations; They R1857 have no knowledge, Who carry R1858 about their F675 wooden idol And pray R1859 to a god who cannot save. 21 "Declare R1860 and set forth your case; Indeed, let them consult together. Who R1861 has announced this from of old? Who has long since declared it? Is it not I, the LORD? And there is no R1862 other God besides Me, A righteous God and a Savior; R1863 There is none except Me. 22 "Turn R1864 to Me and be R1865 saved, all the ends of the earth; For I am God, and there is no other. 23 "I R1866 have sworn by Myself, The word R1867 has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness And will not turn back, That to Me every R1868 knee will bow, every tongue will swear R1869 allegiance. 24 "They will say of Me, `Only in R1870 the LORD are righteousness and strength.' Men will come to Him, And all R1871 who were angry at Him will be put to shame. 25 "In the LORD all the offspring of Israel Will be justified R1872 and will glory." R1873
