Acts 22:1
"Brethren and fathers, hear my defense which I now offer to you."

"Brothers and fathers! Listen to me as I make my defense before you now!"
Acts 22:2
And when they heard that he was addressing them in the Hebrew dialect, they became even more quiet; and he said,

When they heard him speaking to them in Hebrew, they settled down more; so he continued:

"I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, educated under Gamaliel, strictly according to the law of our fathers, being zealous for God just as you all are today.

"I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city and trained at the feet of Gamli'el in every detail of the Torah of our forefathers. I was a zealot for God, as all of you are today.
Acts 22:4
"I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and putting both men and women into prisons,

I persecuted to death the followers of this Way, arresting both men and women and throwing them in prison.
Acts 22:5
as also the high priest and all the Council of the elders can testify. From them I also received letters to the brethren, and started off for Damascus in order to bring even those who were there to Jerusalem as prisoners to be punished.

The cohen hagadol and the whole Sanhedrin can also testify to this. Indeed, after receiving letters from them to their colleagues in Dammesek, I was on my way there in order to arrest the ones in that city too and bring them back to Yerushalayim for punishment.
Acts 22:6
"But it happened that as I was on my way, approaching Damascus about noontime, a very bright light suddenly flashed from heaven all around me,

"As I was traveling and approaching Dammesek, around noon, suddenly a brilliant light from heaven flashed all around me!
Acts 22:7
and I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, `Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?'
 Acts 22:7
I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Sha'ul! Sha'ul! Why do you keep persecuting me?'
Acts 22:8
"And I answered, `Who are You, Lord?' And He said to me, `I am Jesus the Nazarene, whom you are persecuting.'
 Acts 22:8
I answered, 'Sir, who are you?' 'I am Yeshua from Natzeret,' he said to me, 'and you are persecuting me!'
