"Today's Word" with Skip Moen
Devotional for April 21
"the heart of her husband trusts in her and he will have no lack of gain" Proverbs 31:11
Trusts - My wife is my best (and only) editor. She is imminently practical. She is fair. I can afford her services. Today when I sent out my first word (doubt), she said to me, "We already had this word. And besides, you spent two paragraphs telling us about the background of the word instead of telling us what it means in our lives". I got so defensive. It's the academic in me. Twenty-four years of formal education tells you that I like all that intricacy. But she was right.
I went to cut the grass. It takes a long time to cut the grass. God and I have good conversations while I ride back and forth for three hours. But today He was really after me. "Why did you get defensive? Don't you know that I put her in your life to be your helper (remember that word)? She is part of your vision. Listen to her. I want her there, right beside you". The God gave me a new word an old word trust. The word in Hebrew is batah. I have written about it already. This word describes our relationship to God. It is a wonderful reminder of his care. But I forgot that there is only one place in Scripture where this word is used about relationships between human beings. It is in this verse. The same way that I trust God. That's how I should trust my wife. She is God's gift to me.
I get a lot done on the lawnmower. God usually does a lot of talking. I do a lot of listening. Today was a good day for listening. So, all you men out there, hear what I say today trust your wife. God put her there to give you humility and teach you what it means to honor someone else.
