The Hebrew ‘Abel is a distinct word with a different spelling from the personal name Abel (Hebrew, hebel). The precise meaning of the place name is uncertain. It may mean, “brook.” Standing alone, Abel appears in 2 Samuel 20:14-18, probably being the same place as Abel-beth-maachah.
