(tihm' nuh) Place name meaning, “allotted portion.” 1. Town assigned to Dan (Joshua 19:43 ), located on the southern border with Judah (Joshua 15:10 ). The site is likely tell el-Batashi about four miles northwest of Beth-shemesh in Judah. Philistines occupied the site at the time of Samson (Judges 14:1-5 ). Uzziah likely took the site as part of his conquest of Philistine cities (2 Chronicles 26:6 ). His grandson Ahaz lost the city to the Philistines again (2 Chronicles 28:18 ). The city fell to the Assyrian king Sennacherib in 701 B.C. 2. Village in the hill country of Judah (Joshua 15:57 ). This Timnah was the likely scene of Judah's encounter with Tamar (Genesis 38:12-14 ). The probable site lies south of Hebron about four miles east of Beit Nettif.
