Reigned from August 30, 1464 to March 22, 1471. Born Venice, Italy, on February 23, 1417 as Peitro Barbo; died Rome, Italy, on March 22, 1471. He was Bisohp of Cervia, and of Vicenza, and cardinal. As pope he beautified Rome and revised its statutes, punished the Fraticelli, prosecuted heretics in France and Germany, and lent financial assistance to Hungary. He incurred the displeasure of the historian, Platina, when he suppressed the Roman Academy for its pagan attitude. Renowned for his leniency and charity, he repaired many Italian cities, protected Bolognese territory against floods, and forbade legates, governors and judges to receive gifts.
