1. that which is seen: form, shape, freq. in Hom., of the human form or figure, esp. abs. in acc. with Adjs., εἶδος ἄριστος, ἀγητός, κακός, Il. 3.39, 5.787, 10.316; ἀλίγκιος ἀθανάτοισιν Od. 8.174; opp. φρένες, 17.454; opp. βίη, Il. 21.316; δευτέρα πεδ' Ἀγιδὼν τὸ εἶ. Ph. 203a15; ἡ μονὰς εἶδος εἰδῶν τυγχάνει Theol.Ar. 4, cf. 17; decorative pattern or figure, Plu. Them. 29 (pl.); of a musical scale, τοῦ διὰ τεσσάρων τρία εἰδη Aristox. Harm. p.74 M. (identified with σχῆμα, ibid.): in pl., shapes, i.e. various kinds of atoms (cf. ἰδέα), Democr. ap. Thphr. Sens. 51. Geom., δύο εἴδη τῷ εἴδει δεδομένα two figures given in species, Euc. εἶδος, εἴδους, τό (ἘΙΔΩ), in the Sept. chiefly for מַרְאֶה and תֹּאַר; properly, that which strikes the eye, which is exposed to view;
1. the external oppearance, form, figure, shape, (so from Homer down): John 5:37; σωματικῷ εἴδει, Luke 3:22; τό εἶδος τοῦ προσώπου αὐτοῦ, Luke 9:29; διά εἴδους, as encompassed with the visible appearance (of eternal things) (see διά, A. I. 2), 2 Corinthians 5:7, — commonly explained, by sight i. e. beholding (Luth.:im Schauen); but no example has yet been adduced from any Greek writings in which εἶδος is used actively, like the Latin species, of vision; (στόμα κατά στόμα, ἐν εἴδει, καί οὐ δἰ ὁραμάτων καί ἐνυπνίων, Clement. homil. 17, 18; cf. Numbers 12:8 the Sept.).
2. form, kind: ἀπό παντός εἴδους πονηροῦ ἀπέχεσθε, i. e. from every kind of evil or wrong, 1 Thessalonians 5:22 (cf.πονηρός, under the end); (Josephus, Antiquities 10, 3, 1 πᾶν εἶδος πονηρίας. The Greeks, especially Plato, oppose τό εἶδος to τό γένος, as the Latin does species to genus. Cf. Schmidt, chapter 182, 2).

The RV rendering of 1 Thessalonians 5:22 ἀπὸ παντὸς εἴδους πονηροῦ ἀπέχεσθε, ";abstain from every form of evil,"; is confirmed by the recurrent formula in the papyri παντὸς εἴδους = ";of every kind,"; found in business documents passim, e.g. in P Tebt I. 58.21 (B.C. 111) a tax-farmer undertakes προσάξιν ἀπὸ παντὸς εἴδους (πυροῦ) υ ̄, ";to collect from every class 400 artabae of wheat more"; (Edd.) : see further Milligan Thess. p. 76 f. Cf. P Tebt II. 289.5 (A.D. 23) where the strategus writes to a toparch—πέμπε μοι πρόσγραφον τῶν μέχρι τῆς σήμερον διαγεγρ (αμμένων) κατ᾽ εἶδος, ";send me a supplementary classified statement of payments made up to date"; (Edd.), and P Oxy II. 237viii. 42 (A.D. 186) τῆς τελευταίας ἑκάστου ὀνόματος ὑποστάσεως κατὰ κώμην καὶ κατ᾽ εἶδος, ";the last statement of property of each person arranged under villages and classes"; (Edd.) : but see Chrest. II. i. p. 103. In P Tebt I. 60.117 (B.C. 118) a detailed account of land is headed—ὧν ἐστιν τὸ κατ᾽ ἔτος καὶ τὸ κατ᾽ εἶδος, i.e. the land is regarded both under temporal and material conditions, and in P Lond 847.11 (A.D. 170) (= III. p. 54) μονοδεσ (μία) χόρτ (ου) κ (αὶ) ἄλλ (ων) εἰδ (ῶν) the editors suggest the rendering ";harvesting of hay and other miscellaneous crops."; A list of personal property, P Oxy I. 109.1 (iii/iv A.D.), is headed Λόγ (ος) εἰδῶν, ";List of effects."; P Tebt II. 287.12, .20 (A.D. 161–9) shows εἶδος = a ";report"; furnished to the prefect : the editors compare BGU I. 16.8 (A.D. 159–60) (= Selections, p. 84) πρὸς τὸ μεταδοθὲν εἰς ἐξέτασιν εἶδος, ";with regard to the report handed over to us for examination";; see also P Amh II. 65.11 (early ii/A.D.) ἀναγνωσθέντος εἴδους ἵνα μὴ παιδαγωγὸν ἔχωι ̣, P Oxy VII. 1032.17 (A.D. 162) ἔγνωμεν. . [ἦ ]χθαι εἶδος δι᾽ [ο ]ὗ δηλ [οῦ ]ται κτλ., ";we have discovered that a report was made whereby it is declared"; etc. The word is very fully discussed in P Meyer, p. 13 f. In MGr εἶδος still means ";kind,"; ";species,"; and from it comes (ἐ)δικός, ";one’s own.";
