6. rarely c. gen., λελυμένης τῆς γεφύρης ἐντυχόντες having found the bridge broken up, Hdt. 4.140; τῶν παρ' ἡμῖν ἐντυχὼν Ἀσκληπιδῶν having falling in with them, S. Ph. 1333.

Or. 7.210d, etc.; οἱ ἐντυγχάνοντες readers, Plb. 1.3.10, Longin. 1.1; ἐντυχὼν ὑμῶν τῷ ψηφίσματι IG 12(3).176 (Epist. Hadriani), cf. 5(1).1361.7 (Epist. Commodi).
ἐντυγχάνω; 2 aorist ἐνέτυχον; generally with a dative either of person or of thing;
1. to light upon a person or a thing, fall in with, hit upon, a person or a thing; so often in Attic.
2. to go to or meet a person, especially for the purpose of conversation, consultation, or supplication (Polybius, Plutarch, Aelian, others): with the addition περί τίνος, the genitive of person, for the purpose of consulting about a person, Acts 25:24 (R. V. made suit); to make petition: ἐνέτυχον τῷ κυρίῳ καί ἐδεήθην αὐτοῦ, Wis. 8:21; ἐνέτυχον τῷ βασιλεῖ τήν ἀπόλυσιν ... αἰτούμενοι, 3Macc. 6:37; hence, to pray, entreat: ὑπέρ with the genitive of person to make intercession for anyone (the dative of the person approached in prayer being omitted, as evident from the context), Romans 8:21, 34; Hebrews 7:25, (followed by περί with the genitive of person, Clement of Rome, 1 Cor. 56, 1 [ET]); τίνι κατά τίνος (to plead with one against anyone), to accuse one to anyone, Romans 11:2, cf. 1 Macc. 8:32 1 Macc. 10:61, 63f 1 Macc. 11:25. For the technical use of this verb = ";petition,"; ";appeal,"; (see s.v. ἔντευξις) it is enough to cite P Tebt I. 58.43 (B.C.111) ἐντευχαν (l. ἐνέτευχαν) οἱ ι ̄γ ̄ κωμογρ (αμματεῖς) . . τῶι διοικη (τῆι), ";the 13 komogrammateis appealed to the dioecetes,"; ib. 183 (late ii/B.C.) ὑπὲρ ὧν καὶ ἐνέτυχον [Ἀπολ ]λωνίωι, ib. II. 297.9 (c. A.D. 123) τ ̣ο ̣υ ̣̑το ἐπιγνοὺς ὁ συνηγορούμενος ἐνέτυχε Τε ̣[ι ]μοκράτει, ";on learning this my client appealed to T."; (Edd.), ib. 335.2 (mid. iii/A.D.) In the question to an oracle, P Fay 137.3 (i/A.D.) we have the simple, classical sense ἦ μέλω (l. μέλλω) ἐντυγχάνιν; ";shall I meet him ?"; Cf. Michel 308.18 (1st half ii/B.C.) τοῖς ἐντυγχάνουσιν αὐτῶι τῶν πολιτῶν ἴσον αὑτὸν παρεχόμενος διατετέλεκεν, ";has continued dealing fairly with any of the citizens who came across him."; For ἐντυγχάνω κατά, as in Romans 11:2, cf. P Giss I. 36.15 (B.C. 161) ἐνετύχομεν καθ᾽ ὑμῶν περὶ τῶν λ ̄ε ̣̄ [ἀρ ]ο ̣υ ̣(ρῶν), P Amh II. 134.10 (early ii/A.D.) ἐντυχεῖν κατὰ Π., and for ἐ. περί see PSI IV. 340.5 (B.C. 257–6) ἀποκέκριται γὰρ τοῖς ἐντ ̣[υ ]γχάνουσι περὶ Πτολεμαίου, ib. 410.14 (iii/B.C.) περὶὭρου ἐντυχεῖν Ἀμμωνίωι, and P Amh II. 142.10 (iv/A.D.) ἐνέτυχα τῷ σῷ ἀδε [λ ]φῷ Φιλαγρίῳ περὶ τούτ [ω ]ν. In P Oxy III. 533.25 (ii/iii A.D.) we have ἐνέτυχον τῷ διοικητῇ ἕνεκα τῆς προσόδου. In the Petition of Dionysia, P Oxy II. 237 (A.D. 186), the editors note that the verb is used both of presenting and of answering a petition : see their note on v. 21, and cf. Laqueur Quaestiones, p. 15 ff. where ἐντυγχάνειν = ";legere" is fully illustrated.
