נַעַר

(1) m. a boy. (A primitive word, Sanscr. nara man, fem. nar̂, nâr̂, woman, Zend. naere, Pers. نار, نر, Greek ἀνήρ). It is used both of a new-born child, Exodus 2:6; Judges 13:5, Judges 13:7; 1 Samuel 4:21 as well as of a young man of about twenty, Genesis 34:19, 41:12 (compare 37:2 41:2 ); 1 Kings 3:7; Jeremiah 1:6,. It is sometimes used emphat. to express tenderness of age (as in Lat. admodum puer), in various ways. 1 Samuel 1:24, וְהַנַּעַר נַעַר. Vulg. et puer erat adhuc infantulus. 1 Samuel 30:17, אַרְבַּע מֵאוֹת אִישׁ־נַעַר “four hundred men, young men.” In other places boy is rather the name of function, and denotes servant (like Gr. παῖς; Germ. Burfche, Tunge, Knappe). Genesis 37:2, הוּא נַעַר “he (was) servant with the sons of Bilhah,” etc. (er war Hirtenknabe, Hirtenknecht), 2 Kings 5:20, 8:4 Exodus 33:11; 2 Kings 4:12 used also of common soldiers (Germ. die Burfchen; compare אִישׁ No. 1, let. h), 1 Kings 20:15, 17 1 Kings 20:17, 19 1 Kings 20:19; 2 Kings 19:6. Used of the Israelites, when young as a people, Hosea 11:1 compare נְעוּרִים.

(2) By a singular idiom of some books, or rather by an archaism, like the Gr. ἡ παῖς, comm. it is used for נַעֲרָה a girl, and is construed with a fem. verb, Genesis 24:14, 16 Genesis 24:16, 28 Genesis 24:28, 55 Genesis 24:55, 34:3, 12 Genesis 34:12; Deuteronomy 22:15, seq. (The epicene gender has been incorrectly ascribed to this word by Simonis and Winer.) In all these cases the reading of the margin [כתיב] is נַעֲרָה (compare הוּא page 218, A ). In the Pentateuch this occurs twenty-two times; and also to this I refer pl. נְעָרִים used of girls, Ruth 2:21, comp., 22, 23 (LXX. κοράσια), also used of boys and girls, Job 1:19. In like manner the Arabs, in the more elegant language, use masculine nouns also in speaking of the other sex, and leave out the feminine termination which is used in common language, as عَرُوسُ a bridegroom and bride, which latter is in common language عَرُوسَةُ, عجوز old woman, comm. عجوزة; comp. بَعْلُ for the comm. بَعْلَةُ mistress, زَوْجُ for زَوْجَةُ a wife, like the Germ. Gemahl for Gemahlin.

Derivatives, נְעוּרִים, נֹעַר, נַעֲרָה, נַעֲרָן.

II. נַעַר (from the root נָעַר), m. a casting out, driving out, concr. what is driven out (used of cattle), Zechariah 11:16.
