 I. שָׁחַר verb be black (Late Hebrew שָׁחוֺר and derivatives, black, blackness, etc., Sirach 25:17 Hiph`il make black; Aramaic שְׁחַר (Jastrow Dalm), Aph`el grow black, so , coal; Jäger BAS ii. 295 compare Assyrian šûru, coal, šurinnu, fire-pot); — ׳שׁ, of skin Job 30:30.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

שָׁחַר to be or become black (Aramean ܫܚܰܪ, שְׁחַר id). Pregn., Job 30:30, עוֹרִי שָׁחַר מֵעָלַי “my skin is black (and draws away) from off me.”

Derivatives, שָׁחֹר, שְׁחוֹר, שְׁחַרְחֹר, and pr.n. שִׁיחוֹר.

II.

שָׁחַר

(1) pr. apparently to break, to break forth, as light, the dawn, whence

(2) to break in, to pry in, hence to seek, compare בָּקַר No. 3. In Kal once found, Proverbs 11:27 see Piel.

Piel שִׁחַר to seek, a word altogether poetic. Followed by an acc. Job 7:21; Proverbs 7:15, 8:17 and לְ with an inf. Job 24:5; Proverbs 13:24, אֹהֲבוֹ שִׁחֲרוֹ מוּסָר “he who loveth (his son) seeks (i.e. as it were carefully prepares) chastisement for him.” The suff. must be regarded as in the dative. To seek God is

(a) to long after him, Psalms 63:2; Isaiah 26:9.

(b) to turn oneself to him, Hosea 5:15; Psalms 78:34. Followed by אֶל Job 8:5.
