תֹּהוּ (for תֹּהֶו a segolate and penacute form, subst.

(1)  wasteness, concr. that which is wasted, laid waste, Genesis 1:2; Job 26:7 hence

(a) a desert, Deuteronomy 32:10; Job 6:18, 12:24.

(b) destruction, Isaiah 24:10, קִרְיַת תֹּהוּ “a desolated city;” 34:11.

(2) emptiness, vanity, and concr. something vain (syn. הֶבֶל), Isaiah 41:29, 44:9 49:4 59:4 1 Samuel 12:21 nothing, i.q. אַיִן Isaiah 40:17, 23 Isaiah 40:23.

(3) לְתֹהוּ Isaiah 49:4 and acc. תֹּהוּ adv. in vain, Isaiah 45:19.
