Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For this verb in connexion with the performance of religious duties cf. P Leid G.21 (B.C. 181–145) [να ] τυχὼν τῆς παρ᾽ ὑ [μ ]ῶν φιλ [αν ]θρ [ω ]πίας, [ ]πιτελῶ τὰς τῶν θεῶν λε [ι ]τουργίας, P Tebt I. 6.48 (B.C. 140–39) ἐπιτ ]ελεῖν τὰ νομιζόμενα τοῖς θεοῖς ὑπὲρ ἡμῶν καὶ τῶν τ [έκ ]νων, ib. II. 294.11 (A.D. 146) τὰ τῇ προφητείᾳ προ [σ ]ήκοντα ἐ [πι ]τ ̣[ελ ]ε ̣[ ]ν, ib. 292.21 (A.D. 189 90) τὰς ἐπιβαλλο [ύσας ἱερουρ ]γ ̣ι ̣α ̣ς ἐπιτελεῖν, and from the inscrr. Priene 108.27 (after B.C. 129) τάς τε θυσίας ἐπετέλεσεν, al. (cf. Rouffiac Recherches, p. 66), The word is very common = ";accomplish,"; ";complete,"; any work or duty. Thus P Tor I. 1viii. 15 (B.C. 117) μηδὲ τὴν αὐτὴν ἐργασίαν ἐπιτελεῖν, P Par 63.16 (B.C. 164) (= P Petr III. p. 18) ἕκαστα δ᾽ ἐπιτελεσθῆι κατὰ τὸν ὑποδεδειγμένον ἐν τῶι πεμφθέντι σοι παῤ ἡμῶν ὑπομνήματι τρόπον, ";that everything be performed in the manner laid down in the minute sent to you by us"; (Mahaffy), ib. 26.28 (B.C. 163–2) ἡμῖν μὲν ὑπέσχετο τὸ προκείμενον ἐπιτελέσειν (for form see Mayser Gr. p. 357), ";promised us that he would perform what he had been directed to do."; So in connexion with building P Grenf I. 21.17 (B.C. 126) ἕως ἂν ἐπιτελέσωσι —of a dove-cote, P Ryl II. 161.16 (A.D. 71) ἀν [ο ]ικοδομοῦντος καὶ ἐπιτελοῦντος [καὶ ἐπισκ ]ευάζοντος —of a priest’s chamber, or with agricultural operations ib. 166.20 (A.D. 26) τὰ ̣ δ ̣ὲ γεωργ [ι ]κὰ ἔργα πάντα ἄ [ξ ]ω κ ̣α ̣ι ̣, ἐπιτελέσω καθ᾽ ἕτ [ος, PSI I. 57.23 (A.D. 52) προήγμ [ε ]θα ἐγβῆναι τῆς τοῦ κλή (ρου) γεωργ (ίας) τὸ καθῆκ ̣ο ̣ν ̣ ἐπιτελέσας, and with the execution of a deed in P Oxy III. 483.34 (A.D. 108) διὸ ἐπιτελεῖτε ὡς καθήκ (ει). In BGU IV. 1062.19 (A.D. 236–7) the verb is used of a payment—πάντα ἐπιτελέσαι ὅσα τῇ αὐτῇ ὠνῇ ἀνήκει., and in P Giss I. 39.11 (B.C. 204–181) ὃ γέγ ̣[ραφά σοι διὰ ? τῆς συγγραφῆς ], ω ̣[στε ἐμὲ ἐπιτελέσαι, ἐγὼ ἐπ ̣[ιτελέσω ἄνευ λόγου παντὸς ὁτ ]ινοσου ̣̑ν το ̣ῦ πρός σε, the editor notes that ὥστε ἐμὲ ἐπιτελέσαι is dependent on the foregoing ὅ γέγ [ραφά σοι. For a weakened sense corresponding to our ";do,"; cf. P Oxy VIII. 1118.10 (i/ii A.D.) ἐξαλλοτριώσοντα καὶ ἐπιτελέσοντα ὃ ἐὰν αἱρῶμαι, ";alienate it (mortgaged property) and do with it whatever I choose"; (Ed.), P Ryl II. 105.27 (A.D. 136) ἐπιτέλ (εσον) ὡς καθ (ήκει) ";do what is proper"; (Edd.). For the adj. see Michel 1001i. 18 (c. B.C. 200) ἐντειλαμένου ἐπιτελῆ με ποιῆσαι τὰν τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ Φοίνικος ἐντολάν. In the same inscr. the daughter’s name is seen to be Ἐπιτέλεια
