clothing, raiment, dub.l. in Arist. Rh. 1386a32, cf. Poll. 10.51: pl., Ath. 1.18e, Acts 1:10 : dat. pl., ἐσθήσεσι Ph. 2.158, Str. 3.3.7, v.l. in Luke 24:4.
ἔσθησις (Rec.elz ἔσθησις), ἐσθησεως, ἡ (from ἐσθέω, and this from ἐσθής, which see), clothing, apparel: plural, Luke 24:4 R G; Acts 1:10 L T Tr WH; (cf. Philo, vit. Moys. iii. § 18; Eusebius, h. e. 2, 6, 7 and Heinichen's note). (Rare in secular writings (Aristotle, rhet. 2, 8, 14 variant); cf. Winer's Grammar, § 2, 1 c.)

An interesting ex. of this somewhat rare word is found in BGU I. 16.12 (A.D. 159–160) (= Selections, p. 84) where a priest is informed against—ὡς κομῶντος [κ ]αὶ χρω [μ ]ένου ἐρεαῖς ἐσθήσεσι, ";on the charge of letting his hair grow too long, and of wearing woollen garments"; : cf. Acts 1:10.
