ἴχνος, ἰχνεος (ἴχνους), τό (from ἵκω equivalent to ἱκνέομαι, to go) (from Homer down), a footprint, track, footstep: in the N. T. metaph, of imitating the example of anyone, we find στοιχεῖν τοῖς ἴχνεσι τίνος, Romans 4:12; περιεπατήσαμεν ... τοῖς αὐτοῖς ἴχνεσι, 2 Corinthians 12:18; ἐπακολούθειν τοῖς ἴχνεσι τίνος, 1 Peter 2:21, (ἐν ἴχνεσι τίνος ἔον πόδα νέμειν, Pindar Nem. 6, 27); cf. Latininsistere vestigiis alicuius.

Syll 325.6 (I/B.C.) has a good parallel for Romans 4:12 and 1 Peter 2:21 : the excellent young man who is the hero of the laudation comes of a patriotic and pious stock, καὶ αὐτὸς στοιχεῖν βουλόμενος καὶ τοῖς ἐκείνων ἴχνεσιν ἐπιβαίνειν. The literal use of ἴχνος is seen in p Giss 1. 9.10 (Rom.) ὡς δὲ οὐτὲ ἴχνος ἐθεώρο [υν κτλ., P Oxy XII. 1449.51 (A.D. 213–7) μηδὲ ἴχνη ̣, and in the tax ἴχνους ἐρημοφυλακία, for the desert police who protected the caravan ";route,"; e.g. P Fay 75.2 (ii/iii/ A.D.) : cf. p. 196 and the introduction to P Ryl II. 197. For the metaph. use of ἰχνεύω = ";search out,"; as in Sirach 51:15, cf. Kaibel 227.1 ἰχνεύεις, ὦ ξεῖνε, τίς εἴμ᾽ ἐγώ.
