Tact. 17.2: metaph., τὴν ψυχὴν εὐγενεστέραν τῆς φύσεως πλατύνας IG 5(2).268.12 (Mantinea, i B.C. ): — Med., τὴν γῆν πλατύνεσθαι widen one's territory, X. Cyr. 5.5.34: — Pass., grow broad, widen out, Arist. Mir. 841a2, Mu. 393a23, etc.; of the pupils, to be dilated, Plu. 2.376f: metaph., ἡ καρδία πεπλάτυνται is opened, relieved from care, 2 Corinthians 6:11; ἐπλάτυνας τὴν καρδίαν μου LXX Psalms 118:1-29(119).32 .

2. ἐπλατύνθη . . τὸ στόμα μου was opened wide, ib. 1 Kings 2:1 : hence, metaph., μὴ πλατυνθῇ ἡ καρδία be puffed up, ib. De. 11.16: — Med., talk big of oneself, τί πλατύνεαι, ἠλίθιος ὥς; Timo 34.4 .

πλατύνω; passive, perfect 3 person singular πεπλάτυνται (see μιαίνω); 1 aorist ἐπλατυνθην; (πλατύς); to make broad, to enlarge: τί, Matthew 23:5; ἡ καρδία ἡμῶν πεπλάτυνται, our heart expands itself namely, to receive you into it, i. e. to welcome and embrace you in love, 2 Corinthians 6:11 (πλατύνειν τήν καρδίαν for לֵב הִרְחִב, to open the heart namely, to instruction, Psalm 118:32 () (cf. Winer's Grammar, 30)); πλατύνθητε καί ὑμεῖς, be ye also enlarged in heart, viz. to receive me therein, 2 Corinthians 6:13. (Xenophon, Plutarch, Anthol., others.)

";the river,"; the Nile, is seen in P Petr II. 13 (19).10 (B.C. 258–3) περὶ τὴ ]ν ἀνα [χώ ]ρησιν τοῦ ποταμοῦ, ";at the falling of the river,"; OGIS 56.13 (B.C. 238) τοῦ τε ποταμοῦ ποτε ἐνλιπέστερον ἀναβάντος, ";the river being somewhat backward in rising,"; while in ib. 672.8 (A.D. 80) we hear of the clearing of the Ἀγαθὸς Δαίμων ποταμός in length, breadth, and depth. Ποταμός is also applied in the inscrr. to an artificially constructed ";canal,"; e.g. ib. 90.25 (Rosetta stone—B.C. 196) ὀχυρώσας τὰ στόματα τῶν ποταμῶν.
