τάξις, εως,
Ion. ιος, ἡ, (τάσσω)
arranging, arrangement: I in military sense: 1 drawing up in rank and file, order or disposition of an army, Th. 5.68 (init.), 7.5, etc.; τὰ ἀμφὶ τάξεις rules for it, tactics, X. An. 2.1.7; τ. καὶ ἀντίταξις Phld. Piet. 12.
2. battle array, order of battle, κατὰ τάξιν Hdt. 8.86; ἐν τάξει Th. 4.72, etc.; ἐς τάξιν καθίστασθαι, ἀνάγειν, ib. 93, Ar. Av. 400 (anap.); ἵνα μὴ διασπασθείη ἡ τ. Th. 5.70; of ships, ἀποπλῶσαι ἐκ τῆς τάξιος Hdt. 6.14.

2. order, i. e. a fixed succession observing also a fixed time: Luke 1:8.
3. due or right order: κατά τάξιν, in order, 1 Corinthians 14:40; orderly condition, Colossians 2:5 (some give it here a military sense, 'orderly array', see στερέωμα, c.).
4. the post, rank, or position which one holds in civil or other affairs; and since this position generally depends on one's talents, experience, resources, τάξις becomes equivalent to character, fashion, quality, style, (2 Macc. 9:18 2Macc. 1:19; οὐ γάρ ἱστορίας, ἀλλά κουρεακης λαλιᾶς ἐμοί δοκοῦσι τάξιν ἔχειν, Polybius 3, 20, 5): κατά τήν τάξιν (for which in Hebrews 7:15 we have κατά τήν ὁμοιότητα) Μελχισέδεκ, after the manner of the priesthood (A. 1. an arranging, hence, in military sense, disposition of an army, battle array (Thuc., al.).
2. arrangement, order (Plat., al): Luke 1:8.
3. due order: Colossians 2:5 (ICC, in l); κατὰ τάξιν , 1 Corinthians 14:40.
4. office, order (for exx., v. MM, xxiv): Hebrews 5:6 (LXX), Hebrews 5:6; Hebrews 6:20; Hebrews 7:11; Hebrews 7:17 (LXX).†

";a bringing forth,"; and hence ";offspring,"; and metaph. ";interest,"; ";usury,"; because it multiplies or ";breeds"; money (the lexicons compare Shakespeare’s Merck. of Venice I. 3 ";breed of barren metal";). This metaph. usage occurs in the NT in Matthew 25:27, Luke 19:23, and can be readily illustrated from the Κοινή, e.g. P Eleph 27a..21 (iii/B.C.) τετάγμεθα τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ τοὺς τόκους ἐπὶ τὴν βασιλικὴν τράπεζαν, P Grenf II. 18.17 (B.C. 127) τόκους διδράχμους τῆς μνᾶς τὸν μῆνα ἕκαστον, i.e. interest at 2 % a month (cf. s.v. δίδραχμον), BGU IV. 1171.21 (i/B.C.) τοὺς ὀφειλομένους τόκους, P Tebt II. 384.18 (A.D. 10) ἀ ̣ν ̣τὶ τῶν τούτων τόκων, ";in return for the (remission of) interest upon this sum"; (Edd.), P Bilabel 35.5 (A.D. 87) με κ [υρίαν εἶναι ] δραχμῶν κ ̄ καὶ τὸν τόκον (cf..10), and P Oxy I. 114.4 (ii/iii A.D.) πεπλήρωκα τὸν τόκον μέχρι τοῦ Ἔπειφ πρὸς στατῆρα τῆς μνᾶς, ";I have paid the interest up to Epeiph, at the rate of a stater per mina"; (Edd.). In the LXX τόκος renders ךְ, ";oppression,"; by transliteration, as in Psa. 71꞉14 [MT Psalms 72:14].
