 χωρίς (ΧΑΩ, see χώρα (cf. Curtius, § 192)), adverb, from Homer down;

1. separately, apart: John 20:7.

2. as a preposition with the genitive ( Winer s Grammar, § 54,6);

a. wilhout any person or thing (making no use of, having no association with, apart from, aloof from, etc.): 1Cor. (iv. 8); John 11:11>; Philippians 2:14; 1 Timothy 2:8; 1 Timothy 5:21; Heb. (Hebrews 2:9> Treg. marginal reading); Hebrews 11:40>; παραβολῆς, without making use of a parable, Matthew 13:34; Mark 4:34; ὁρκωμοσίας, Hebrews 7:20(21),Hebrews 7:21>; χωρίς αἵματος, Hebrews 9:7,18; ἁιματεχυσιας, Hebrews 9:22; without i. e. being absent or lacking: Romans 7:8f. ( R. V. apart from); Hebrews 11:6; Hebrews 12:8,14; James 2:18 ( Rec. ἐκ),20,26 (in these three examples R. V. apart from); without connection and fellowship with one, John 15:5 ( R. V. separate from Christ), Ephesians 2:12; without the intervention (participation or cooperation) of one, John 1:3; Romans 3:21 (Romans 3:28>; Romans 4:6; 10:14>); χωρίς θεμελίου, without laying a foundation, Luke 6:49; χωρίς τῆς σής γνώμης, without consulting you (cf. γνώμη, at the end ( Polybius 3,21, 1,2. 7)), Philemon 1:14; 'without leaving room for': χωρίς ἀντιλογίας, Hebrews 7:7; οἰκτίρμων, Hebrews 10:28>. χωρίς τοῦ σώματος, freed from the body, 2 Corinthians 12:3 L T Tr WH ( Rec. ἐκτός, which seeb. α.); χωρίς ἁμαρτίας, without association with sin, i. e. without yielding to sin, without becoming stained with it, Hebrews 4:15; not to expiate sin, Hebrews 9:28.
