The phrase ἐν τῷ ἐμφανεῖ is found in P Hib I. 93.4 (c. B.C. 250) where a man, acting as surety, undertakes to produce his friend ἐν ] τῶι ἐμφανεῖ ἔξω ἱεροῦ κα [ὶ πάσης ] σκέπης, ";openly, outside of a temple or any other shelter,"; and similarly P Oxy IV. 785 (c. A.D. 1) and the other citations in P Hamb I. p. 121 n.4. The quasi-legal use of the adj. may be further illustrated from BGU IV. 1145.40 (B.C. 5) ἐὰν δὲ καὶ ἡ Διδύμη μὴ π [αρ ]έχηται τ ̣[ὴν ] Λύκαν καὶ Διονύσιον τῷ Ἀχ ̣ι ̣λ (λεῖ) ἐνφανεῖς, εἶναι καὶ αὐ (τὴν) ἀγωγίμη (ν), P Oxy II. 260.11 (A.D. 59) ἔσασθα [ι ἐμ ]φανῆ τῷ Σαραπίωνο [ς ] ἀρχιδικαστοῦ [β ]ήματι, ";I will appear at the court of the chief justice Sarapion,"; and so ib. X. 1258.6 (A.D. 45), P Gen I. 28.24 (A.D. 136) al. In P Oxy VII. 1021.2 (A.D. 54) the deceased Emperor Claudius is described as ἐνφανὴς θεός, ";god manifest"; : see further s.v. ἐπιφανής. For a Christian use see the fragment of a lost Gospel, P Oxy IV. 655.19, where the disciples ask the Lord—πότε ἡμῖν ἐμφανὴς ἔσει καὶ πότε σε ὀψόμεθα; and receive the answer—ὅταν ἐκδύσησθε καὶ μὴ αἰσχυνθῆτε.
The corr. subst. ἐμφανεία may be illustrated from P Grenf II. 62.10 (A.D. 211) where Demetrius agrees to act as surety μονῆς καὶ ἐμφανίας, ";for the non-removal and appearance"; of Pasis : cf. P Oxy VIII. 1121.22, .25 (A.D. 295).
