ἁλι-εύς (laterwritten ἁλεεύς LXX Isaiah 19:8, Matthew 4:18, PFlor. 127.15), ὁ, gen. έως, lon. ῆος, and contr. ἁλιῶς Pherecr. 200: acc. pl. ἁλιέας Antiph. 190.17, Alex. 155.1; gen. ἁλιέων Id. 76.5: (ἅλς, ἅλιος A): —
1. one who has to do with the sea, and So 1 fisher, Od. 12.251, 22.384, Hdt. 3.42, S. Fr. 115, Pl. Ion 539e, etc.: ἀνὴρ ἁ. Hes. Sc. 214.
2. seaman, sailor, Od. 24.419; ἐρέτας ἁλιῆας rowers on the sea, 16.349; as Adj., ἁλιεὺς στρατός Opp.H. 5.121.
3. a fish, = βάτραχος, Arist. HA 620b12, Plu. 2.978d, Paus. 3.21.5.

The word is too common in itself to need illustrating, unless we recorded the appearance of the epithet ποτάμιος to indicate a fisherman who exercised his calling on the Nile. It is, however, a good example of the rule by which in Hellenistic of the second period (i.e. A.D.) two i-sounds are not allowed to come together : see Proleg.3 p. 44 f. In this one case, in the nom. and accus. pl. of ἁλιεύς , dissimilation instead of contraction has taken place : ἁλεεῖς occurs in NT and in P Flor I. 12715 (A.D. 256), but note 1192 ἁλι [εῖς and 2758, from the same correspondence, and BGU IV. 10356 (v/A.D.). Of course P Petr III. 59 ii. 8 belongs to a period when the phonetic difficulty was not felt. Another expedient was ἁλιέας , P Flor II. 2018 (iii/A.D.). Hellenistic does not follow the Attic contractions (Δωριῶς , -ῶν ) : cf. ἁλιέων BGU III. 7566 (A.D. 199), Ἐριέως P Petr III. 59 (d)14. We find ἁλιείων in P Amh II. 3029 (ii/B.C.).
