Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἀναλίσκω: from the present ἀναλόω (3 person singular ἀναλοι, 2 Thessalonians 2:8 WH marginal reading) come the future ἀναλώσω; 1 aorist ἀνήλωσα and ἀναλωσα (see Veitch); 1 aorist passive ἀνηλωθην; (the simple verb is found only in the passive ἁλίσκομαι to be taken; but in ἁλίσκομαι is short, in ἀναλίσκω long; cf. Alexander Buttmann (1873) Ausf. Spr. ii., p. 113; (Veitch, see under the words; "the different quantity, the active form, the transitive sense of the perfect, and above all the difference of sense, indicate a different origin for the two verbs." Liddell and Scott)); (from Pindar down);

1. to expend; to consume, e. g. χρήματα (to spend money; very often in Xenophon).

2. to consume, use up, destroy: Luke 9:54; Galatians 5:15; 2 Thessalonians 2:8 R G WH marginal reading (the Sept. Jeremiah 27:7 (); Proverbs 23:28; Genesis 41:30, etc.) (Compare: καταναλίσκω, προσαναλίσκω.)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

P Flor II. 212.4 (A.D. 254) εἰς τοσαύτην ἀτυχίαν ἦλθες τοσαῦτα λήμματα ἀναλίσκων ὡς μὴ ἔχειν σε ἀρτά [β ]ην μίαν λωτίνου. P Eleph 5.22 οἴνου ἀνηλώθησαν κ (εραμία) μ ̄γ ̄, P Par 49.19 (B.C. 164–58) μηδὲ ἀναλίσκειν χαλκοῦς, etc. Notice ἀναλ ̣ουμένων in the same sense, P Lond 1177.11 (B.C. 113) (= III. p. 181). P Grenf II. 77.15 (iii/iv A.D.) (= Selections, p. 121) φροντίσατε οὖν τὰ ἀναλωθέντα ἑτοιμάσαι, ";see to it therefore that you furnish the sums expended."; P Oxy I. 58.20 (A.D. 288) τὰ μάταια ἀναλώματα π [α ]ύσεται, ";useless expense will be stopped,"; with reference to a proposed reduction in the number of treasury officials. The noun ἀνάλωμα (often ἀνήλωμα), which does not happen to occur in NT, is exceedingly common. The verb is an early compound of ϝ αλίσκω, whose simplex survives in the passive ἁλίσκομαι : the α ̄ is due to contraction of -α ϝ α - after loss of digamma. The meaning destroy is therefore parallel with ἀναιρέω. Note aor. α ̣̓να ̣λ ̣ῳσα P Oxy X. 1295.8 (ii/iii A.D.).
