Thayer's Expanded Definition

παροψίς, παροψίδος, (παρά (which see IV. 1), and ὄψον, on which see ὀψάριον);

1. "a side-dish, a dish of dainties or choice food suited not so much to satisfy as to gratify the appetite; a side-accompaniment of the more solid food"; hence, equivalent to παροψημα; so in Xenophon, Cyril 1, 3, 4 and many Attic writings in Athen. 9, p. 367 d. following

2. the dish itself in which the delicacies are served up: Matthew 23:25, 26 (here T omits; WH brackets παροψίδος); Artemidorus Daldianus, oneir. 1, 74; Alciphron 3, 20; Plutarch, de vitand. aere alien. § 2. This latter use of the word is condemned by the Atticists; cf. Sturz, Lex. Xenophon, iii., 463f; Lob. ad Phryn., p. 176; (Rutherford, New Phryn., p. 265f); Poppo on Xenophon, Cyril 1, 3, 4.

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

";over and above,"; ";superfluous,"; in popular Greek is often in its compve. and superlve. forms practically equivalent to πλείων, πλεῖστος, a usage which is fully developed in MGr.

Exx. of the word are P Tebt II. 459.4 (B.C. 5) (= Witkowski.2, p. 126) καὶ ὃ ἐὰν περισσὸν γένηται, μέτρη [σ ]ον αὐτοῖς κομισάμενος τὴν τιμὴν τοῦ λοιποῦ, P Fay 111.11 (A.D. 95–6) (= Selections, p. 66) περισ ̣ὸν ̣ [ἐν ]ε ̣τιλάμ [η ]ν σ ̣υ ̣(= σοι) εἰς Διο [νυσι ]άδα μῖναι, ";I gave you strict charges to remain at Dionysias,"; ib. 117.23 (A.D. 108) περιτὸν γέγρ ̣α ̣π ̣τ ̣α ̣[ι, ";more than enough has been written,"; Chrest. I. 238ii. 4 (c. A.D. 117) περισσὸν ἡγοῦμαι διεξω (= ο)δέστερον ὑμεῖν γράφειν, ";I count it superfluous to write you at greater length,"; and P Tebt II. 423.15 (early iii/A.D.) ἐὰν εὓρῃς ἀγοραστὰς τῶν π ̣ε ̣ρισσῶν ὄνων, παραχώρησον μέχρι τρ <ι >ῶν, ";if you find any purchasers of the surplus donkeys, get rid of as many as three"; (Edd.). Add from inscrr. Cagnat IV. 317.8 (end i/B.C.) ἐκ τῶν περισσῶν τῆς [ἑορτῆς χρη ]μάτων καθειέρωσεν, and C. and B. ii. p. 658, No. 611—

τὸ ζῆν τροφὴ πό [τ ]ος τε. ἠτι [μασμένα ?

περισσὰ δέ ἐστι τὰ ἄλλα [ὰ ἀνθρώποις μέλει ?

For the compve. cf. P Flor II. 127.22 (A.D. 256) πάντως περισσότερον, ";in every possible way,"; and BGU II. 380.10 (iii/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 105) where a mother writes to her sick son, ἐτολότην (l. ἐθολώθην), ὥς σου περισ (= σσ)ότερον νω ̣χελεωυομένου (cf. Aq Proverbs 18:9; Proverbs 24:10, Job 2:4), ";I was troubled because you were only able to walk so slowly."; See also Dieterich Untersuchungen, p. 181 n..2, though we have not been able to trace his reference to BGU 13, 8.
