כָּלָה

(1)  to be completed, finished. (Kindred roots כָּלַל and כָּלָא q. d. abfchließen), Exodus 39:32; 1 Kings 6:38, hence to be prepared, made ready for some one by any one, Proverbs 22:8, וְשֵׁבֶט עֶבְרָתוֹ יִכְלֶה “and the rod of his anger shall be prepared;” followed by מֵעִם, מֵאֵת of pers. 1 Samuel 20:7, 1 Samuel 20:9, 25:17 Esther 7:7 also to be accomplished, fulfilled, used of a prophecy, Ezra 1:1; Daniel 12:7.

(2) to be past, gone by, of a space of time, Genesis 41:53; Isaiah 24:13, אִם־כָּלָה בָצִיר “when the vintage is ended,” 32:10 10:25. וְכָלָה זַעַם “and the indignation (period of indignation) shall be past,” 16:4.

(3) to be consumed, spent, Genesis 21:15; 1 Kings 17:16 to be wasted, to be destroyed, to perish, Jeremiah 16:4; Ezekiel 5:13; Psalms 39:11 to waste, to pine away, Lamentations 2:11, “my eyes waste away with tears.” Of frequent occurrence is the phrase כָּֽלְתָה נַפְשִׁי Psalms 84:3, כָּֽלְתָה רוּחִי Psalms 143:7, כָּלוּ עֵינַי Psalms 69:4, כִּלְיוֹתַי Job 19:27, my soul, my spirit, my eyes, my reins, pine away, or waste, for, I myself pine or languish, especially from disappointed hope. Job 11:20, 17:5 Jeremiah 14:6; Lamentations 4:17 (comp. חוּס); to vanish away, used of a cloud, Job 7:9, smoke, Psalms 37:20, time, Job 7:6; Psalms 31:11.-In fut. once תִּבְלָה 1 Kings 17:14 in the manner of verbs לא֞.

Piel כִּלָּה

(1) causat. of Kal No. 1, to complete, to finish, Genesis 2:2, 6:16 also to prepare evil for any one, Proverbs 16:30.

(2) to come to an end, i.e. to finish, followed by a gerund, to cease doing any thing, Genesis 24:15, הוּא טֶרֶם כִּלָּה לְדַבֵּר “he had not yet done speaking,” had not ceased apeaking. Genesis 43:2; Numbers 7:1; Deuteronomy 31:24, followed by מִן; Exodus 34:33; Leviticus 16:20.

(3) to consume, Isaiah 27:10, to waste (one’s strength), Isaiah 49:4 to destroy men, peoples. Genesis 41:30; Jeremiah 14:12; 2 Samuel 21:5, עַד כַּלֵּה 2 Kings 13:17, 19 2 Kings 13:19, and עַד־לְכַלֵּה 2 Chronicles 31:1, even unto destruction; to make to pine away, to cause to languish. Job 31:16; 1 Samuel 2:33; Leviticus 26:16 to cause to vanish, Psalms 78:33, 90:9.-For inf. Piel כַּלֵּה there is once כַּלֵּא, in the manner of verbs לא֞.

Pual כֻּלָּה and כָּלָּה to be completed, finished. Genesis 2:1; Psalms 72:20.
