 I. [מַסָּה] noun feminine despair (literally melting, failing); — only לְמַסַּת נְקִיִּים יִלְעָ֑ג Job 9:23 at the despair of innocent ones he mocketh; so ᵑ7 Ew Di Bu Du > Ges Hi and others trial (by calamity), √ נסה.

מַסָּה f. (from the root נָסָה), plur. מַסּוֹת temptation, trials; used of

(1) the great deeds of God, by which he would both prove and excite the faith of his people, Deuter. 4:34 7:19 29:2. On the other hand

(2) a temptation of Jehovah is i.q. a complaining against him, Psalms 95:8 whence [Massah], the pr.n. of a place in the desert מַסָּה Exodus 17:7; Deuteronomy 6:16, 9:22 33:8.

(3) calamity, by which God tries any one, πειρασμός, N. T., Job 9:23.
