1319) rn (נר NR) AC: Plow CO: Light AB: ?: The pictograph n is a picture of a seed, the r is a picture of the head of a man representing the top or beginning of something. Combined these mean "seed beginning". Rains in the mountainous areas cause a flooding of the rivers. The rivers swell causing the water to flood the land next to the river. This is the only water that the land will see and is necessary for crop production. After the flood season, the land is plowed by the use of a plow attached to the yoke of the oxen. The surface of the soil is dry but, when the soil is turned up it glistens in the sun from the water remaining in the soil. This water is necessary for the seed to begin germination.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

נָהָר m. constr. נְהַר, plur. נְהָרִים, נַהֲרֵי and נְהָרוֹת (m. Psalms 93:3); constr, נַהֲרוֹת, dual. נַהֲרַיִם (see below) a stream.

(1)  a flowing, das Strömen, die Strömung. Jonah 2:4 וְנָהָר יְסֹבְבֵנִי “and the flowing (of the sea) surrounds me” (compare ὠκεανοῦ ῥέεθρα, Il. ξ΄, 245). Job 20:17, נַהֲרֵי נַחֲלֵי דְבַשׁ וְחֶמְאָה “streams of rivers of milk and honey,” Isaiah 44:27.

(2) a river, stream, Genesis 2:10, 14 Job 14:11, 22:16 40:23, etc. Followed by a genit. of country, as נְהַר מִצְרַיִם the river of Egypt, i.e. the Nile, Genesis 15:18 נְהַר גּוֹזָן the river of Gozan, i.e. Chaboras 2 Kings 17:6 נַהֲרֵי כוּשׁ the rivers of Ethiopia (the Nile and Astaboras), Isaiah 18:1; Zephaniah 3:10 נַהֲרוֹת בָּבֶל (the Euphrates, with its canals), Psalms 137:1 נַהֲרוֹח דַּמֶּשֶׂק 2 Kings 5:12 also followed by the name of the river in the gen. instead of in apposition, as נְהַר פְּרָת the river of Euphrates, Genesis 15:18 נְהַר כִּבָר the river Chebar, Ezekiel 1:1, Ezekiel 1:3. With art. הַנָּהָר the river κατʼ ἐξοχὴν is the Euphrates, Genesis 31:21; Exodus 23:31 more fully הַנָּהָר הַגָּדוֹל פְּרָת Genesis 15:18; Deuteronomy 1:7, 11:24 Joshua 1:4 poet. also without the art., Isaiah 7:20 Jerem. 2:18 Micah 7:12; Zechariah 9:10; Psalms 72:8. Once, however, the context shews נָהָר to be the Nile, Isaiah 19:5 and in Psalms 46:5 many interpreters understand Siloah [Kidron would be better]; and this is not unsuitable, since נָהָר is also used of smaller streamlets, as of the waters of Damascus, 2 Kings 5:12. A river is used as an image of abundance, Isaiah 48:18, 66:12.

Dual נַהֲרַיִם (prop. from the form נַהַר) the two rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates; whence אֲרַם נַהֲרַיִם Syria of the two rivers, i.e. Mesopotamia, see אֲרָם.
