 [אָרַשׂ] verb betroth (Mishna ארס, Phoenician ארש in proper name, Lag Sem i. 50 connects with Arabic a fine, literally pay the price, & so gain the right of possession; compare Aramaic אָרִיס one who farms land; Assyrian mirsu, tribute, Zehnpf BAS i. 518) — only

Pi`el Pu`al; Pi`el Perfect 3 masculine singular אֵרֵשׂ Deuteronomy 20:7; אֵרַשְׂתִּי 2 Samuel 3:14; suffix אֵרַשְׂתִּיךְ Hosea 2:21 (twice in verse); Hosea 2:22; Imperfect 2 masculine singular תְּאָרֵשׂ Deuteronomy 28:30; — betroth (subject man) object woman, אִשָּׁה Deuteronomy 20:7; Deuteronomy 28:30; followed by ב of price paid to father & ל of husband 2 Samuel 3:14; ב of gift to bride & ל of husband Hosea 2:21; Hosea 2:22, where figurative of Yahweh's covenant mercy to Israel.

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

אָרַשׂ a root not used in Kal, as rightly observed by Manger on Hosea 2:21 pr. i.q. עָרַשׂ, عرش to erect, to build, whence עֶרֶשׂ a bed, couch with a canopy. From the idea of a bed-fellow عَرْسُ a husband or wife, عَرُوسُ one espoused; hence

Piel, אֵרֵשׂ to espouse a woman; pr. to make a spouse. Constr. with אֵרֵשׂ אִשָּׁה Deuteronomy 20:7, 28:30 אֵרֵשׂ לוֹ אִשָּׁה Hosea 2:21, 22 2 Samuel 3:14. There is added בּ of price [paid for the wife] 2 Sa. loc. cit.

Pual, אֹרַשׂ f. in Pause אֹרָשָׂה to be betrothed, Exodus 22:15; Deuteronomy 22:28. Part. מְאֹרָשָׂה, Deu, 22:23, 25 Deuteronomy 22:25, 27 Deuteronomy 22:27. (Ch. אֲרַס Pi. and Pa. id).
