[שָׁכַר] verb be, or beocme, drunk, drunken (Late Hebrew id., derived species and derivatives; Sirach 40:18; Sirach 40:20 שכר strong drink; Arabic be drunken, also be full, fill; Assyrian šikaru; = שֵׁכָר, šikaru, drunken, perhaps also verb šakâru; Ethiopic : Aramaic שִׁכְרָא, = שְׁכָר, especially date-wine (Löw p. 125), compare be drunken, usually (derived species) defile, deform, etc.; from שֵׁכָר, Egyptian t-av-k-±ra WMM As.u.Eur.102, Greek σίκερα, Lewy Fremdw. 81); —

Gesenius' Hebrew and Chaldee Definition

שָׁכַר fut. יִשְׁכַּר; Arab. سَكِرَ

(1)  to drink to the full (i.q. רָוָה), Hagg. 1:6 to drink to hilarity, Song of Solomon 5:1; Genesis 43:34. It is very often

(2) to make oneself drunken, Genesis 9:21 followed by an acc. of the drink, Isaiah 29:9, 49:26 followed by מִן Isaiah 51:21. Metaph. in the prophets the wicked are said to be drunken, since they rush, by a kind of madness, upon their own destruction, Isaiah 29:9, 51:21 Lamentations 4:21; Nahum 3:11. Compare כּוֹם, תַּרְעֵלָה. Part. pass. שְׁכוּרָה drunken, Isaiah 51:21.

Piel, to make drunken, 2 Samuel 11:13 metaph. (see Kal), Jeremiah 51:7; Isaiah 63:6.

Hiphil, id., to make drunken

(a) arrows with blood, Deuteronomy 32:42.

(b) nations (see Kal and Piel), Jeremiah 51:57.
