surely he: We have already adverted to the completion of the prophecies respecting the final destruction of Babylon - on Isaiah 13:18, and shall only add a few more observations, in order to shew more clearly the full accomplishment of some of these predictions. Strabo says that in his time - about the Christian era a great part of it was a desert. Jerome says that in his time - cir. ad 340 it was quite in ruins, the walls merely serving for an inclosure for wild beasts, for the hunting of the kings of Parthia, and modern travellers universally concur in describing it in a state of utter desolation, and the habitation of wild beasts and noxious reptiles.

Therefore hear ye the counsel of the Lord that he hath taken against Babylon,.... The same is said in Jeremiah 49:20; only, instead of Edom, Babylon is here put, and in the next clause:
and his purposes that he hath purposed against the land of the Chaldeans; instead of the inhabitants of Teman, the land of the Chaldeans:
surely the least of the flock shall draw them out; the weakest and most feeble in the army of Cyrus should be more than a match for any in Babylon, and should draw them out, and devour them, as dogs and wolves the sheep out of the flock:
surely he shall make [their] habitation desolate with them;
