It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in mortals (Psalm 118:8).

The Titanic was the largest ship of its day. It was almost three football fields long and weighed over 46,000 tons. Its nickname was "unsinkable." Many aboard were drinking and dining and dancing. The band was playing. It was on its maiden voyage from England to New York City when it struck an iceberg 1600 miles northeast of its destination. In two and a half hours the unsinkable sank. There were not enough life boats. Only 705 out of the 2200 passengers were rescued.

The Hindenburg was an airship, a German-built blimp, 800 feet long and 135 feet in diameter. It was one of the premier commercial transcontinental airships in the days before jets. On its final voyage from Germany, it burst into flames while approaching a landing in New Jersey. Thirty-six passengers perished.

The space shuttle Challenger blew up in the air and was destroyed only 73 seconds after lift-off. All seven crew members were killed. The cause of the worst space disaster in the history of NASA was a defective rubber seal on one of the Challenger's two booster rockets.

Some of the most advanced man-made vehicles of their times have been involved in some of the worst tragedies of the 20th century. Man's achievements may, at times, seem impressive, but putting our faith in man's best efforts cannot compare to trusting in God.

...put my confidence in God.
