Chapter 14

Job Continues: Death Comes Soon to All

 “Man who is [k] Job 15:14; Job 25:4; Matthew 11:11 born of a woman is [l] Job 10:20; Job 16:22; Genesis 47:9; Psalms 39:5; Psalms 89:47 few of days and [m] See Job 5:7 full of trouble.
 He comes out like [n] Psalms 103:15; Isaiah 40:6-7; 1:10; 1 Peter 1:24 a flower and [o] Psalms 37:2; Psalms 90:6 withers; he flees like [p] See Job 8:9; Job 17:7; Psalms 109:23 a shadow and continues not.
 And do you [q] [Psalms 8:4; Psalms 144:3] open your eyes on such a one and [r] Job 22:4; Psalms 143:2 bring me into judgment with you?
 Who can bring [s] Job 15:14; [Psalms 51:5; John 3:6] a clean thing out of an unclean? There is not one.
 Since his [t] [Job 7:1; Psalms 39:4] days are determined, and [u] Job 21:21 the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass,
  [v] Job 7:19 look away from him and leave him alone, [fn] that he may enjoy, like [w] Job 7:1 a hired hand, his day.
 “For there is hope for a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease.
 Though its root grow old in the earth, and [x] Isaiah 11:1 its stump die in the soil,
 yet at the scent of water it will bud and put out [y] [Job 29:19] branches like a young plant.
 But a man dies and is laid low; man breathes his last, and [z] Job 29:7 where is he?
  [a] Isaiah 19:5 As waters fail from a lake and a river wastes away and dries up,
 so a man lies down and rises not again; till [b] Deuteronomy 11:21; Psalms 89:29; [Psalms 72:5; Matthew 5:18] the heavens are no more he will not awake or be [c] [John 11:11] roused out of his sleep.
 Oh that you would [d] [Psalms 27:5; Psalms 31:20] hide me in [e] See Job 21:13 Sheol, that you would [d] [Psalms 27:5; Psalms 31:20] conceal me [f] [Isaiah 26:20] until your wrath be past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me!
 If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my [g] Job 7:1 service I would [h] Job 13:15 wait, till my renewal [fn] should come.
 You would [i] Job 13:22 call, and I would answer you; you would long for the [j] See Job 10:3 work of your hands.
 For then you would [k] Job 31:4; Job 34:21 number my steps; you would not keep [l] [Job 10:6] watch over my sin;
 my transgression would be [m] Deuteronomy 32:34; [Hosea 13:12] sealed up in a bag, and you would cover over my iniquity.
 “But the mountain falls and [n] Isaiah 34:4 crumbles away, and [o] Job 18:4 the rock is removed from its place;
 the waters wear away the stones; the torrents wash away the soil of the earth; so you destroy the hope of man.
 You prevail forever against him, and he passes; you change his countenance, and send him away.
 His sons come to honor, and he [p] [Ecclesiastes 9:5] does not know it; they are brought low, and he perceives it not.
 He feels only the pain of his own body, and he mourns only for himself.”
