Chapter 15

I Am the True Vine

“I am the [r] [Jeremiah 2:21] true vine, and my Father is [s] [1 Corinthians 3:9] the vinedresser.
[t] John 15:6; Matthew 3:10; Matthew 7:19; [Romans 11:17; 2 Peter 1:8] Every branch in me that does not bear fruit [u] [Matthew 15:13; Romans 11:22] he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, [v] [Matthew 13:12] that it may bear more fruit.
Already [w] John 13:10 you are clean [x] John 17:17; [John 15:7; Ephesians 5:26] because of the word that I have spoken to you.
[y] John 15:5-7; 1 John 2:6; [Philippians 1:11; Colossians 1:23]; See John 6:56 Abide [z] See John 3:15 in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
I am the vine; [a] Romans 6:5 you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that [b] John 15:16; Colossians 1:6, Colossians 1:10 bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
If anyone does not abide in me [c] See John 15:2 he is thrown away like a branch and withers; [d] Matthew 13:40-42; [Ezekiel 15:4] and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.
If [e] See John 8:31 you abide in me, and my words abide in you, [f] See John 14:13 ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
[g] Isaiah 61:3; Matthew 5:16; 2 Corinthians 9:13; Philippians 1:11 By this my Father is glorified, that you [h] John 15:5 bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
[i] See John 5:20 As the Father has loved me, [j] See John 13:34 so have I loved you. Abide in my love.
[k] [John 14:15, John 14:23] If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as [l] John 8:55; John 17:4; Philippians 2:8 I have kept [m] See John 10:18 my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.
These things I have spoken to you, [n] [2 Corinthians 2:3] that my joy may be in you, and that [o] John 3:29; John 16:24; John 17:13; 1 John 1:4; 2 John 1:12 your joy may be full.

[p] See John 13:34 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
[q] Romans 5:7-8; Ephesians 5:2 Greater love has no one than this, [r] See John 10:11 that someone lay down his life for his friends.
You are [s] Luke 12:4 my friends [t] [John 15:10; Matthew 12:50] if you do what I command you.
[u] [John 15:20] No longer do I call you servants, [fn] for the servant [xr]
[w] [John 13:7, John 13:12] does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for [x] John 3:32; John 8:26, John 8:40; [John 16:13] all that I have heard from my Father [y] John 17:26; [Genesis 18:17; 1 Corinthians 2:16; 1 Corinthians 13:9-10] I have made known to you.
You did not choose me, but [z] See John 13:18 I chose you and appointed you that you should go and [a] [2 John 1:8] bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that [b] [John 15:7]; See John 14:13 whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
These things I command you, [c] John 15:12 so that you will love one another.

The Hatred of the World

[d] John 7:7; 1 John 3:13; [John 15:23-24] “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
[e] [1 John 4:5] If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because [f] John 17:14, John 17:16; [Luke 6:26; Galatians 1:4; 4:4] you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
Remember the word that I said to you: [g] John 13:16; Matthew 10:24; [John 15:15] ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, [h] John 16:33; 1 Corinthians 4:12; 2 Corinthians 4:9; 1 Thessalonians 2:15; 2 Timothy 3:12 they will also persecute you. [i] [Ezekiel 3:7]; See John 8:51 If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
But [j] John 16:3 all these things they will do to you [k] Matthew 10:22; Matthew 24:9; Revelation 2:3; [Acts 5:41; 1 Peter 4:14, 1 Peter 4:16] on account of my name, [l] See Acts 3:17 because they do not know him who sent me.
If I had not come and spoken to them, [m] [Matthew 11:22, Matthew 11:24; Luke 12:47-48]; See John 9:41 they would not have been guilty of sin, [xr]
but now they have no excuse for their sin.
[n] See John 5:23 Whoever hates me hates my Father also.
[o] John 3:2; John 7:31; John 9:32; Matthew 9:33; [John 10:32, John 10:37] If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, [m] [See John 15:22 above] they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have [p] See John 14:9 seen and hated both me and my Father.
But [q] See John 10:34; John 12:38 the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: [r] Cited from Psalms 35:19 or Psalms 69:4 ‘They hated me without a cause.’
“But [s] See John 14:16-17, John 14:26 when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, [t] 1 Corinthians 12:3; 1 John 5:7 he will bear witness about me.
And [u] John 19:35; John 21:24; 1 John 1:2; 1 John 4:14; [3 John 1:12]; See Luke 24:48 you also will bear witness, [v] See Acts 4:20 because you have been with me [w] [Luke 1:2; Acts 1:21-22; 1 John 2:7] from the beginning.
