And the LORD saide vnto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the Arke: for thee haue I seene righteous before me, in this generation.

Surely there shall not one of these men of this euill generation see that good land, which I sware to giue vnto your fathers:

This was the word of the Lord which he spake vnto Iehu, saying, Thy sonnes shall sit on the throne of Israel, vnto the fourth generation. And so it came to passe.

Thou shalt keepe them, (O Lord,) thou shalt preserue them, from this generation for euer.

This is the generation of them that seeke him: that seeke thy face, O Iacob. Selah.

Now also when I am old and gray headed, O God, forsake me not: vntill I haue shewed thy strength vnto this generation, and thy power to euery one that is to come.

The children of Ephraim being armed, and carying bowes, turned backe in the day of battell. They kept not the couenant of God: and refused to walke in his Law: And forgat his workes: and his wonders that he had shewed them. Marueilous things did he in the sight of their fathers: in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. Hee diuided the Sea, and caused them to passe through: and he made the waters to stand as an heape. In the day time also he led them with a cloud: and all the night with a light of fire. Hee claue the rockes in the wildernes: and gaue them drinke as out of the great depthes. Hee brought streames also out of the rocke, and caused waters to runne downe like riuers. And they sinned yet more against him: by prouoking the most High in the wildernes. And they tempted God in their heart: by asking meat for their lust. Yea, they spake against God: they said, Can God furnish a table in the wildernes? Behold, he smote the rocke, that the waters gushed out, & the streames ouerflowed; can he giue bread also? Can he prouide flesh for his people? Therefore the Lord heard this, and was wroth, so a fire was kindled against Iacob: and anger also came vp against Israel. Because they beleeued not in God: and trusted not in his saluation: Though he had commanded the cloudes from aboue: and opened the doores of heauen: And had rained downe Manna vpon them to eate, and had giuen them of the corne of heauen. Man did eate Angels food: hee sent them meat to the full. He caused an East wind to blow in the heauen: and by his power hee brought in the South wind. He rained flesh also vpon them as dust: and feathered soules like as the sand of the sea. And hee let it fall in the midst of their campe, round about their habitations. So they did eate, & were well filled: for he gaue them their owne desire. They were not estranged from their lust: but while their meate was yet in their mouthes, The wrath of God came vpon them, and slew the fattest of them: and smote downe the chosen men of Israel. For all this they sinned still: and beleeued not for his wondrous works. Therefore their dayes did he consume in vanitie, and their yeeres in trouble. When hee slew them, then they sought him: and they returned, and inquired early after God. And they remembred that God was their rocke: and the high God, their redeemer. Neuerthelesse they did flatter him with their mouth: and they lyed vnto him with their tongues. For their heart was not right with him: neither were they stedfast in his couenant. But hee being full of compassion, forgaue their iniquity, and destroyed them not; yea many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stirre vp all his wrath. For he remembred that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and commeth not againe. How oft did they prouoke him in the wildernesse: and grieue him in the desert? Yea they turned backe and tempted God: and limited the holy one of Israel. They remembred not his hand: nor the day when hee deliuered them from the enemie: How he had wrought his signes in Egypt: and his wonders in the field of Zoan: And had turned their riuers into blood: and their flouds, that they could not drinke. Hee sent diuers sorts of flies among them, which deuoured them: and frogges which destroyed them. He gaue also their increase vnto the caterpiller: and their labour vnto the locust. He destroyed their vines with haile: and their Sycomore trees with frost. He gaue vp their cattel also to the haile: and their flockes to hot thunder-bolts. He cast vpon them the fiercenesse of his anger, wrath and indignation, and trouble: by sending euill angels among them. He made a way to his anger, hee spared not their soule from death: but gaue their life ouer to the pestilence. And smote all the first borne in Egypt: the chiefe of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham: But made his owne people to goe forth like sheepe: and guided them in the wildernesse like a flocke. And he led them on safely, so that they feared not: but the sea ouerwhelmed their enemies. And he brought them to the border of his sanctuarie: euen to this mountaine which his right hand had purchased. He cast out the heathen also before them, and diuided them an inheritance by line: and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents. Yet they tempted and prouoked the most high God: and kept not his testimonies: But turned backe, and dealt vnfaithfully like their fathers: they were turned aside like a deceitfull bowe. For they prouoked him to anger with their high places: and moued him to ielousie with their grauen images. When God heard this, hee was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel: So that he forsooke the tabernacle of Shiloh: the tent which he placed among men, And deliuered his strength into captiuitie: and his glory into the enemies hand. He gaue his people ouer also vnto the sword: and was wroth with his inheritance. The fire consumed their young men: and their maidens were not giuen to mariage. Their priests fell by the sword: and their widowes made no lamentation. Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleepe: and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine. And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetuall reproch. Moreouer he refused the tabernacle of Ioseph: and chose not the tribe of Ephraim. But chose the tribe of Iudah: the mount Sion which he loued.

Fortie yeeres long was I grieued with this generation: and sayd, It is a people that doe erre in their heart: and they haue not knowen my wayes.

This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created, shall praise the Lord.

But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like vnto children, sitting in the markets, and calling vnto their fellowes,

The men of Nineue shall rise in iudgement with this generation, and shall condemne it, because they repented at the preaching of Ionas, and behold, a greater then Ionas is here.

The Queene of the South shall rise vp in the iudgement with this generation, and shall condemne it: for she came from the vttermost parts of the earth to heare the wisedome of Solomon, and behold, a greater then Solomon is here.

Then goeth he, and taketh with himselfe seuen other spirits more wicked then himselfe, and they enter in and dwell there: And the last state of that man is worse then the first. Euen so shal it be also vnto this wicked generation.

Uerily I say vnto you, All these things shal come vpon this generation.

Uerely I say vnto you, this generation shall not passe, till all these things be fulfilled.

And he sighed deepely in his spirit, and saith, Why doeth this generation seeke after a signe? Uerely I say vnto you, There shall no signe be giuen vnto this generation.

Whosoeuer therefore shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this adulterous and sinfull generation, of him also shall the Sonne of man bee ashamed, when he commeth in the glory of his Father, with the holy Angels.

And it came to passe, that while he executed the Priests office before God in the order of his course, According to the custome of the Priests office, his lot was to burne incense when he went into the Temple of the Lord. And the whole multitude of the people were praying without, at the time of incense. And there appeared vnto him an Angel of the Lord, standing on the right side of the Altar of incense. And when Zacharias sawe him, hee was troubled, and feare fell vpon him. But the Angel said vnto him, Feare not, Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall beare thee a sonne, and thou shalt call his name Iohn. And thou shalt haue ioy and gladnesse, and many shall reioyce at his birth: For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shal drinke neither wine, nor strong drinke, and he shall bee filled with the holy Ghost, euen from his mothers wombe. And many of the children of Israel shall hee turne to the Lord their God. And hee shall goe before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turne the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisedome of the iust, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. And Zacharias said vnto the Angel, Whereby shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife well striken in yeeres. And the Angel answering, said vnto him, I am Gabriel that stand in the presence of God, and am sent to speake vnto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings. And behold, thou shalt be dumbe, and not able to speake, vntill the day that these things shall bee performed, because thou beleeuest not my words, which shall bee fulfilled in their season. And the people waited for Zacharias, and maruelled that hee taried so long in the temple. And when he came out, he could not speake vnto them: and they perceiued that he had seene a vision in the temple: for he beckened vnto them, and remained speechlesse. And it came to passe, that as soone as the dayes of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his owne house. And after those dayes his wife Elizabeth conceiued, and hid her selfe fiue moneths, saying, Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the dayes wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproch among men. And in the sixt moneth, the Angel Gabriel was sent from God, vnto a citie of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgine espoused to a man whose name was Ioseph, of the house of Dauid, and the virgins name was Marie. And the Angel came in vnto her, and said, Haile thou that art highly fauoured, the Lord is with thee: Blessed art thou among women. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her minde what maner of salutation this should be. And the Angel said vnto her, Feare not, Marie, for thou hast found fauour with God. And behold, thou shalt conceiue in thy wombe, and bring forth a sonne, and shalt call his name Iesus. He shall be great, and shall be called the sonne of the Highest, and the Lord God shall giue vnto him the throne of his father Dauid. And hee shall reigne ouer the house of Iacob for euer, and of his kingdome there shall be no end. Then said Marie vnto the Angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And she spake out with a loud voyce, and saide, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruite of thy wombe. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to mee? For loe, assoone as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine eares, the babe leaped in my wombe for ioy. And blessed is she that beleeued, for there shalbe a performance of those things, which were told her from the Lord. And Marie said, My soule doth magnifie the Lord. And my spirit hath reioyced in God my sauiour. For hee hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for behold, from hencefoorth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to mee great things, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that feare him, from generation to generation. Hee hath shewed strength with his arme, he hath scattered the proud, in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put downe the mighty from their seates, and exalted them of low degree. Hee hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich hee hath sent emptie away. Hee hath holpen his seruant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for euer. And Mary abode with her about three moneths, and returned to her owne house. Now Elizabeths full time came, that shee should be deliuered, and shee brought foorth a sonne. And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy vpon her, and they reioyced with her. And it came to passe that on the eight day they came to circumcise the childe, and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. And his mother answered, and said, Not so, but he shalbe called Iohn. And they said vnto her, There is none of thy kinred that is called by this name. And they made signes to his father, how he would haue him called. And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is Iohn: and they marueiled all. And his mouth was opened immediatly, and his tongue loosed, and hee spake, and praised God. And feare came on all that dwelt round about them, and all these sayings were noised abroad thorowout all the hill countrey of Iudea. And all they that had heard them, layde them vp in their hearts, saying, What maner of childe shal this be? And the hand of the Lord was with him.
