Holman Bible Dictionary

(az uh ri' ah) Personal name meaning, “Yahweh has helped.” 1. Son and successor of Amaziah as king of Judah (792-740 B.C.). Also called Uzziah. See Uzziah. 2. High priest under Solomon (1 Kings 4:2 ) listed as son of Zadok (1 Kings 4:2 ) or of Ahimaaz (1 Chronicles 6:9 ), the son of Zadok (2 Samuel 15:27 ). If the latter is accurate, then son in 1 Kings 4:2 means descendant. 3. Son of Nathan in charge of the system of obtaining provisions for the court from the twelve government provinces ( 1 Kings 4:5 ). He would have supervised the persons listed in 1 Kings 4:7-19 . 4 . Great grandson of Judah (1 Chronicles 2:8 ). 5 . A member of the clan of Jerahmeel in the tribe of Judah (1 Chronicles 2:38-39 ). 6 . High priest, son of Johanan (1 Chronicles 6:10 ). 7 . High priest, son of Hilkiah (1 Chronicles 6:13-14 ) and father of Seraiah, who is listed as Ezra's father (Ezra 7:1 ). The list in Ezra is not complete. Apparently some generations have been omitted. 8. Member of family of Kohath, the Temple singers (1 Chronicles 6:36 ). Apparently called Uzziah in 1 Chronicles 6:24 . 9 . A priest, son of Hilkiah (1 Chronicles 9:11 ) may be same as 7. above. 10. Prophet, son of Oded, whose message gave King Asa (910-869 B.C.) courage to restore proper worship in Judah (2 Chronicles 15:1-8 ). 11 . Two sons of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah (873-848 B.C.) according to 2 Chronicles 21:2 . Perhaps the boys had different mothers, each of whom gave the son the common name Prayer of Azariah 12 . Son of Jehoram, king of Judah (852-841) according to 2 Chronicles 22:6 , but the correct name is probably Ahaziah as in 2 Kings 8:29 . Azariah represents a copyist's error in Chronicles. 13. Two military commanders of 100 men who helped Jehoiada, the high priest, depose and murder Athaliah as queen of Judah and install Joash as king (835-796). 14. High priest who led 80 priests to oppose King Uzziah of Judah (792-740) when he tried to burn incense in the Temple rather than let the priests. God struck Uzziah with a dreaded skin disease (2 Chronicles 26:16-21 ). 15 . A leader of the tribe of Ephraim under Pekah, king of Israel (752-732 B.C.), who rescued captives Pekah had taken from Judah, cared for their physical needs, and returned them to Jericho (2 Chronicles 28:5-15 ). 16 . A Levite whose son Joel helped cleanse the Temple under Hezekiah, king of Judah (715-686) (2 Chronicles 29:12-19 ). 17 . A Levite who helped cleanse the Temple (2 Chronicles 29:12-19 ). See 16. above. 18. Chief priest under King Hezekiah who rejoiced with the king over the generous tithes and offerings of the people (2 Chronicles 31:10-13 ). 19 . Son of Meraioth in the list of high priests and father of Amariah (Ezra 7:3 ) Since list in Ezra is incomplete, this Azariah may be same as 6. above. 20. Helper of Nehemiah in rebuilding wall of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 3:23 ). 21 . Man who returned from Exile with Zerubbabel (Nehemiah 7:7 ) about 537 B.C. He is called Seraiah in Ezra 2:2 . 22 . Man who helped Ezra interpret the law to the people in Jerusalem (Nehemiah 8:7 ). 23 . Man who put his seal on Nehemiah's covenant to obey God's law (Nehemiah 10:2 ). 24 . A leader of Judah, possibly a priest, who marched with Nehemiah and others on the walls of Jerusalem to celebrate the completion of rebuilding the city defense walls (Nehemiah 12:33 ). He may be identical with any one or all of 20.-23. above. 25. Friend of Daniel renamed Abednego by Persian officials. God delivered him from the fiery furnace (Daniel 1:7; Daniel 4:1-30 ). See Jeremiah 42:1-43:7 ). Hebrew text reads Jezaniah in Jeremiah 42:1 .
