(chi' uhn) KJV spelling of divine name meaning, “the constant, unchanging one” (Amos 5:26 ). NRSV reads “Kaiwan;” NAS, “Kiyyun;” NIV, “pedestal.” The Hebrew word kiyun appears to represent an intentional change by the Hebrew scribes, inserting the vowels of siqquts , “abomination,” for an original reading, Kaiwan , the name of a Babylonian God of the stars equivalent to the Greek god Saturn. Amos condemned the people of Israel for priding in their sophisticated worship of foreign gods. He called them back to the simple worship of the wilderness. See Sikkuth .
