Doeg

Holman Bible Dictionary

(doh' ehg) Personal name meaning, “full of fear.” An Edomite in the service of King Saul (1 Samuel 21:7 ). He was present at Nob at the time David arrived there during the course of his flight from Saul. Doeg subsequently reported to Saul that the priest Ahimelech had given assistance to David. After confronting Ahimelech, Saul ordered his guards to slay the priests of Nob. When the guards refused to obey, Saul told Doeg to kill the priests. In a grisly show of obedience, Doeg took the lives of eighty-five people. The title of Psalm 52:1 refers to this incident. See Saul .
