Gadfly
Holman Bible Dictionary
A stinging insect (stinging fly, TEV), either a horsefly (Tabanidae, NAS) or a botfly (Oestridae). Jeremiah 46:20 pictured Nebuchadnezzar as a gadfly attacking Egypt which was pictured as a fat heifer. Uncertain of the meaning of the Hebrew term, the KJV translators relied on the context and translated the Hebrew as destruction.
