Gauze, Garments of
Holman Bible Dictionary
One of the fine items associated with Jerusalem socialites (Isaiah 3:23 , NRSV). The meaning of the underlying Hebrew is debated. The sense is either a gauze garment (NRSV; interpreted as a revealing garment, TEV; scarves of gauze, REB) or a mirror (hand mirror, NAS). The KJV has glasses in the sense of looking glasses. At this time a mirror would be a piece of polished metal. At Isaiah 8:1 the Hebrew word translated as gauze garment (or mirror) is translated as (writing) tablet.
