Holman Bible Dictionary
The fifth letter of the Hebrew alphabet; it carries the numerical value five. In Judaism he is used as an abbreviation for the divine name —Yahweh (tetragrammaton). In some English versions he appears as a superscript to 1 Chronicles 4:33-40 of Psalm 119:1 each of which begin with this letter. See Hebrew Language; Writing .
