Lips

Holman Bible Dictionary

Fleshy, muscular folds surrounding the mouth. In the Old Testament, lips frequently take the character of the whole person. There are flattering and lying lips (Psalm 12:2; Psalm 31:18 ); joyful lips (Psalm 63:5 ); righteous lips (Proverbs 16:13 ); fearful lips (Habakkuk 3:16 ). Uncircumcised lips (Exodus 6:12 ) most likely refer to stammering lips or lack of fluency in speech (Exodus 4:10 ). Mourning is expressed in part by covering the upper lip with one's hand (Leviticus 13:45 ).
