Portion of head used to ingest food and to communicate. 1. Synonymn for lips (1 Kings 19:18; 2 Kings 4:34; Job 31:27; Proverbs 30:20; Song of Song of Solomon 1:2 ); 2 . Organ of eating and drinking (Judges 7:6; 1 Samuel 14:26-27 ), sometimes used in figurative expressions such as when wickedness (Job 20:12 ) or God's word (Psalm 119:10 ) is described as sweet to the mouth. Anthropomorphic descriptions of the earth or Sheol speak of them opening their mouths to drink blood or swallow persons (Genesis 4:11; Numbers 16:30 ,Numbers 16:30,16:32; Isaiah 5:14 ). 3 . Organ of speech (Genesis 45:12; Deuteronomy 32:1 ) or laughter (Job 8:21; Psalm 126:2 ). The phrase “the mouth of the Lord has spoken it” serves as a frequent reminder of the reliability of a prophetic message (Isaiah 1:20; Isaiah 40:5; Jeremiah 9:12; compare Deuteronomy 8:3; Matthew 4:4 ). Fire (2 Samuel 22:9 ) or a sword (Revelation 1:16 ) proceeding from the mouth of God pictures the effectiveness of God's word of judgment. 4. The Hebrew term for mouth is used for the openings of wells, caves, sacks, as well as for the edge of a sword.
