KJV translation of the Hebrew term Lilith ( Isaiah 34:14 NRSV). The term occurs only here in Scripture unless textual emendations are accepted ( Job 18:15; Isaiah 2:18 ). Interpreters divide over the natural (night creatures, NIV; nightjar, REB) or supernatural (night monster, KJV, NAS; night hag, RSV) nature of Lilith. Whatever Lilith's nature, the text stresses the great desolation which falls on God's enemies.
