Holman Bible Dictionary

(passh' uhr) Personal name meaning, “son of (the god) Horus. 1. Chief officer in the Jerusalem Temple in the last years before Nebuchadnezzar's victory over the city. He had Jeremiah beaten and imprisoned (Jeremiah 20:1-2 ). He or another Pashur was the father of Gedaliah (Jeremiah 38:1 ). 2 . A man in Zedekiah's court in Jerusalem (Jeremiah 21:1 ). As the Babylonian army approached, Pashhur asked Jeremiah for a word from the Lord. Jeremiah prophesied the destruction of the city (Jeremiah 21:1-7; compare Jeremiah 38:1-3 ). 3 . Forebear of a priestly family (1 Corinthians 9:12 ) who returned from the Exile (Ezra 2:38 ) and who later gave up their foreign wives (Ezra 10:22; compare Nehemiah 10:3; Nehemiah 11:12 ).
