Portion

Holman Bible Dictionary

Allotment, allowance, ration, share. Portion is frequently used in the literal sense of a share in food, clothing, or property as well as in a variety of figurative senses. Wisdom writings often designate one's lot in life as one's portion (Job 20:29; Job 27:13; Ecclesiastes 9:9 ). God's chosen people are termed God's portion (Deuteronomy 32:9; Jeremiah 21:10 ). The Levites did not receive tribal territory with the other tribes but had the Lord for their special portion (Numbers 18:20 ). To have a portion in the Lord is to share the right of joining the community in worship of God (Joshua 22:25 ,Joshua 22:25,22:27; compare Nehemiah 2:20 ). The Psalms often speak of the Lord as the portion of the faithful (Psalm 16:5; Psalm 73:26; Psalm 119:57 ).
