Holman Bible Dictionary
KJV translation of the Greek syrtis meaning “sandbar” ( Acts 27:17 ). Modern translations take syrtis as a proper name for the great sandbars off the west coast of Cyrene (modern Libya). NIV and REB paraphrase “sandbars of Syrtis” well conveys the sense. See Syrtis .
