Scorpion

Holman Bible Dictionary

(sscawr' pi ahn) Small invertebrate animal (buthus ) known for the venom and sting in its narrow segmented tail. In the wilderness God protected Israel from scorpions (Deuteronomy 8:15 ) and could protect His prophet from them (Ezekiel 2:6 ). Scorpions gave their names to an insidious instrument of punishment with lashes and spikes. Rehoboam chose to use these to enforce his harsh policies (1Kings 12:11,1 Kings 12:14 ).
