(sshahb' bih thi) Personal name meaning, “belonging to the Sabbath.” Levite who explained the law to the people as Ezra read it (Nehemiah 8:7 ). He or a namesake opposed Ezra's plan of divorce for foreign wives (Ezra 10:15 ). He was in charge of “external business of the house of God” (Nehemiah 11:16 REB): either maintaining outward appearance of the Temple or collecting the tithes.
