Holman Bible Dictionary
(tihf' ssuh) Place name meaning, “passage, ford.” 1. City on the west bank of the Euphrates about 75 miles south of Carchemish, representing the northeastern limit of Solomon's kingdom (1 Kings 4:24 ). 2 . Site near Tirzah in Samaria (2 Kings 15:16 ), possibly a corruption of Tappuah, the reading of the earliest Greek translation which REB, RSV, TEV follow.
